CASE STUDY

Why the pathology department at AUH choose digital microscopes

Learn how a digital microscope solved the need for better imagery, easy documentation and sharing findings within the diagnostics of cardiovascular pathology at Aarhus Universitetshospital.

The case at a glance

Diagnostics in cardiovascular pathology requires sharp imagery to be able to study all the details. The need for a better workflow turned into an investment of a digital microscope, solving not only the needs that the diagnostics required but also fitting perfectly into the limited workspace.

“I was inspired by a colleague who uses a digital microscope and wanted to optimize my diagnostic with better imagery and easy.”

Christina Stilling, consultant at the Pathology Department, Aarhus Universitetshospital.

Challenges

There were multiple requirements that had to be met, to find a microscope that would support and improve the diagnostics:

  • Limited workspace

The examination takes place inside a small fume cupboard.

  • Sharing documentation

Being able to take pictures and upload these to a shared drive was needed to make the workflow and collaboration between colleagues easier.

  • Flexibility

In addition to a limited workspace, there was also a need for a solution that could be adapted to work with organs of different sizes.

The full setup of the ZAP system, with a +2 lens and ring light mounted to the microscope and a foot switch under the table. The visuals from the microscope can be seen on the external monitor to the right.

Solution

The choice fell on a ZAP FLEX system with a +2 lens, foot pedal and a ring light:

  • The flexibility allowed for easy adjustment of the position depending on the size of the organ below
  • The foot switch made it easy to capture pictures for sharing with colleagues, as well as adjusting zoom
  • Built-in ruler allowed for easy measuring of size, and can be added to documentation

Result

The incorporation of a digital microscope in the diagnostics of cardiovascular pathology helped solve the challenges that the new workspace presented. The flexibility of the ZAP FLEX system and the use of a foot switch greatly enhanced the workflow, and improved documentation and collaboration between colleagues.

ZAP: All the benefits with full flexibility

At the Pathology Department at AUH, the need for a better workflow turned consultant Christina Stilling's attention towards TAGARNO. Inspired by a colleague, she reached out to find the perfect solution. The challenge was making the most of a limited workspace, while still fulfilling the need for high-quality images and the ability to collaborate with colleagues anywhere. The solution was a ZAP system, choosing the flex mounting option to make the most of the little space available.
